Roger Federer is back on the ATP World Tour this week after a 3 month break during the clay court season where Rafael Nadal yesterday defended his title in French Open and doing so remains number one in the world. Now Roger Federer opens against either qualifier Mikhail Youzhny or Germany’s Mischa Zverev in Stuttgart this week.
Federer owns a perfect 17-0 FedEx ATP Head2Head mark against Youzhny and an undefeated 5-0 record over Zverev. Surging #NextGenATP star Denis Shapovalov is seeded sixth and looms in the quarter-finals, with fourth seed Nick Kyrgios as a potential semi-final opponent. If Federer reaches the final in Stuttgart he will become number one next monday once again.
The World No. 2 is making his third straight tournament appearance in Stuttgart, having reached the semi-finals in 2016 (l. to Thiem) and suffered a first-round exit in 2017 (l. to Haas). He is looking to go all the way this year. Federer is the most successful grass court player in the open era with a total of 17 titles (8 Wimbledon and 9 Halle). Last year Federer gained 2 500 points in Halle and Wimbledon. Since Rafael Nadal only played Wimbledon during the grass court swing last year and bounced out in the 4th round against Gilles Muller he does not have to defend more then 180 points on the grass. Right now Nadal has 8 770 ATP ranking points and Federer 8 670.
