Nadal pulls out of Western & Southern Open

World number one Rafael Nadal pulls out of Western & Southern Open. Nadal, the 17-time Grand Slam winner, collected his 80th career title on Sunday by beating Greek youngster Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2 7-6 (7-4). He withdrew from Cincinnati yesterday to be sure he will be fit and injury free at the last Grand Slam of the year – the US Open in New York. Nadal is the reigning champion in New York where he will aim for his 4th title and 18th Grand Slam title.

“I am sure the tournament will be a success and I wish him and his team all the best. I am also sad for those amazing fans in Cincy and around who always gave me great support.

“I am sure I’ll see them next year and I am sorry I won’t be with them this year. Thanks for all the support as always.”

Rafael Nadal won his 4th Rogers Cup last sunday and doing so gave him a Big lead at the ATP Rankings. Now he is 3 780 points ahead of world number two Roger Federer and 4 810 points ahead of Juan Martin del Potro in third place.

The best bet for winning the title at Western & Southern Open 2018 is now world number ten Novak Djokovic or world number two Roger Federer.

The US Open, the final major of the year, starts on August 27.
