Premier League 2018/2019: Brighton – Preview, Squad, and Signings

Brighton & Hove Albion were promoted last year and surprised many when playing great football at times. Winning at home against Manchester United and drawing at home against Tottenham for example. Will the team be able to stay in the Premier League this year though?

It is usually easier to stay up the first season as a promoted team than the second. Brighton surprised many, including me at times when the team played some beautiful football. Manager Chris Hughton showed that you can play good football even though your wallet is a lot smaller than some of your competitors. The team signed some quality players to improve the squad before the season. The most outstanding player was Pascal Groß who scored a total of 7 goals last season. The player that arrived from German side FC Ingolstadt 04 made history to become the first Brighton & Hove Albion player to score in the Premier League in their fixture against now relegated West Bromwich Albion. It will be crucial for the team to keep the German playmaker. Groß together with goalkeeper Matthew Ryan and winger Izquierdo was also critical signings to ensure that the team would stay in the highest tier of football in England.

But what has the team done this transfer window to improve their possibilities to stay up?

The team has not been on the lazy side this summer. The team has signed 10 (!) players and there are some real uncut diamonds in that bunch. AZ Alkmaar’s Alireza Jahanbakhsh is one of the best signings in the whole league if you ask me. The Iranian international was the nations best player in the World Cup and won the golden boot in the Dutch league. He became the first Asian player to become the top scorer in a major European league. This is a great signing for the Seagulls. Later you have Yves Bissouma from the French side Lille. The Mali international will also be an interesting improvement on the midfield. Brighton might be a surprise this year once again but most likely they will have to fight for survival this time around as well.
