Premier League 2018/2019: Leicester – Preview, Squad, and Signings
Leicester City, the fairytale that did the impossible. Even if that was a couple of years ago, it is still as impressive and mind-blowing. Many speculated that their surprising success would result in a massive loss in players and momentum. This has not happened but this time around, the team has lost some key players in their squad. Is this the year when shit goes sideways?
When the Claudio Ranieri, the renowned Italian manager took over after Nigel Pearson in 2015, many were skeptical. Many supporters didn’t understand why the team would hire a used-to-be and these included former Leicester player and fan, English national and legend Gary Lineker. Lineker even promised to appear in only his underwear on national TV if the team would win the league. He stood by his words. The monumental achievement will go to history and most likely always be the biggest upset in British football.
That was three years ago and now the team has become a regular team in the Premier League. The team has been ending up mid table the last couple of seasons even if they kept their most important players (Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez). This summer the team lost Mahrez to Manchester City. His departure has been coming and no one was surprised. Jamie Vardy will stay but the team also lost Robert Huth, the central defensive general who was released by the club. Including Mahrez, Ahmed Musa, the Nigerian international left for Al-Nassr. When Musa arrived many where excited, including me after what you had seen by the forward in CSKA Moscow in the Champions League. He never reached those heights so his departure won’t be missed, to be honest. Even if the team has lost some players, the team has also signed some really talented players. James Maddison from Norwich will be a great improvement to their midfield. The attacking midfielder has been in the limelight for a couple of seasons any many top clubs in the Premier League has been wanting to sign the British U21-international. Ghezzal from AS Monaco and Çağlar Söyüncü from Freiburg will also be interesting improvements to the squad.
All Leicester City supporters shouldn’t expect the same upset, they just couldn’t. The team will figurate in the middle of the table once again. A solid prediction is 10th place.
