Rafa Nadal’s 20 Grand Slam titles. The Spanish legend and megastar Rafael Nadal is now at 20 Grand Slam titles in his career. Here is a look back at all of his Grand Slam titles, finals and also listed the Slams the Spaniard has not been able to play.
When Rafael Nadal landed an ace out wide to convert championship point against Novak Djokovic in the Roland Garros final today, not only did he lift a record-extending 13th Coupe des Mousquetaires, he also equalled the most important record in tennis history.
For the first time, the Spaniard is on equal terms with Roger Federer on the Grand Slam titles leaderboard. Federer has held the outright lead in the category for more than 11 years, dating back to his 15th major championship victory at Wimbledon in 2009.
For many people, Nadal has been seen as only really good on the red clay. Not that peculiar since he has been so extremely dominant winning 13 slams at the French Open. Ad his 11 titles in Monte Carlo and Barcelona, plus 9 titles in Rome and 5 in Madrid and it is not hard to see why people can believe he is a clay court specialist.
Fact is that Rafael Nadal has been injured almost every season since his break onto the ATP world tour back in 2003 when he reached the third round at Wimbledon. (The youngest player to do so since Boris Becker in 1984). And 2004 when he for the first time clashed with Roger Federer he won 6-3, 6-3 on the hard courts of Miami. So, Nadal showed from the start that he is an amazing player on every surface. The seasons Nadal has been healthy he has been dominating the tour no matter what surface. With with 4 Titles in US Open, 2 Wimbledon titles and 1 Australian Open trophy Nadal is, only counting those Grand Slams, at the same number of GS as all-time greats John McEnroe and Mats Wilander.
A lot of people also tend to forget/miss out that Nadal reached 5 straight finals at the all England Club between the years 2006-2011, having missed the chance to defend his title in 2009 because of knee injuries he got in French Open that same year. 2 titles and 3 finals in Wimbledon makes him one of the all time greats in this tournament as well. In 2018 Nadal came really close to his 6th Wimbledon final and a shot for his 3rd title when he lost in 5 sets to Novak Djokovic (8-10 in the decider) in the semis.
