Finally, we have come to group D. The group of death with teams like South America’s Argentina, Europe’s Iceland and Croatia and Africa’s Nigeria. Let us start off with Argentina.

Argentina should always be considered as one of the favorites to win the World Cup, no matter what. The country has produced players like Maradona, Batistuta, Crespo, Caniggia, Simeone and of course players like Aguero, Messi, Higuain. We will come back to them later during this analysis. The South American team has won the world cup twice and appeared in five finals, you can’t oversee those statistics. The country won the tournament in 1978 and 1986. Additionally to this, the team featured in the last world cup final but was later defeated by the German collective. That was four years ago and the road to qualify for Argentina was not the easiest. Sure, you could argue that the South American qualifying process is the most difficult in the world but Argentina usually surpassed quite easily. This time around though, all hope seemed to be lost. Argentina had to win their last game against Ecuador but everything went sideways for the Argentinians as Ecuador scored the first goals. Everything seemed lost but then the Argentinian Messiah, Lionel Messi stepped up and banged in a hat-trick. The almost impossible happened and the team was through to the tournament. Nerve racking but this bad run and monumental finish could actually be in the teams favor in Russia.

Why do would you state that? Well, the team bad qualifying run could be seen as positive since the team isn’t seen as the favorite to win it, a contender for sure but there are other teams that have more pressure to win it. It should also be noted that even if Messi scored a hat-trick to qualify the team, Messi is notorious to not perform in the national team. More often or not when a team is centered around one player, this could result in a lock and dysfunctional squad. Hopefully, Aguero, Dybala, Higuain, Otamendi, Facio, Mascherano will be able to produce if Messi isn’t.

What are the chances for Argentian then? I strongly believe they could win the whole tournament. They came close four years ago but now it is their turn. A solid bet is that Argentina wins the group at least, even if it is the group of death.
