Australia, the only country participating from Oceania this tournament. Australia had to play knock-out game against an Asian and Central American team to secure their participation in the World Cup. This year, Australia was drawn against Honduras and the surprising nation of Syria. The country that has been plagued by a civil war since the Arab Spring was just one goal from taking the qualification game to draw. Australia had done what they were supposed to and now had their aim on the World Cup in Russia.

The Caltex Socceroos. The national team is sponsored by the American oil company Caltex and from the perspective of a football supporter, it is easy to follow the group with supporters that hate modern football. In the case of sponsored national teams, it is a bit too much for my taste. But do these “Socceroos” have any possibilities to advance from this group?

Well, it looks better than it has ever done before. Only four years ago, the team qualified for the tournament in Brazil. Then the team ended up in a group consisting of Spain, Holland, and Chile. Even if the team did not gain a single point, their performance was justified to give a couple of points at least. This performance against bronze winners Holland was tremendous. The veteran Tim Cahill scored one of the most beautiful goals in the whole tournament during this fixture. This year around the group is more forgiving compared to in Brazil. France will be difficult to beat or even getting a point. That is included for all teams in the group. Peru and Denmark are on paper better teams but there is absolutely a possibility for the Socceroos to win or draw against these teams on a good day.

Players like Aaron Moy, Matthew Ryan, Jedinak and, Tim Cahill will all most likely feature in the team and these are some quality players. It is fun and beautiful to root for an underdog and Australia is a part of the bunch of underdogs. If you should be rational, Australia will not have a chance here either and will end up last in the group but you never know. This year it is maybe it is the time of the Caltex Socceroos.
