Finally, we have come to group C and first out we have one of the biggest favorites and arguably the strongest squad in the whole tournament – France. Les Blues, who only two years ago knocked-out Germany in the 2016 Euros. After this, the team lost the final against Portugal but to win 2-0 against Germany, that is an achievement for any team. The French won their qualifying group for this tournament and the group included Sweden and Holland etc. France only lost one game and that was against Sweden. In the lost fixture, the team displayed their major flaw: Hugo Lloris. The Tottenham goalkeeper has been a profound figure in European football for over a decade but has a tendency to make big mistakes. The player has been known for making devastating blunders and these have only become more frequent during the years. This is perhaps the only liability of the team. You could also question the central defense of the French team. Varane and Umtiti are the two players that will end up playing in the central defense are extremely talented but somewhat inexperienced. Even if they are playing in the two biggest teams in the world, Real Madrid and Barcelona, they are still young and that could possibly be a liability for the team as well.
France has won the tournament once, in 1998 and featured in two finals. Could the team be contending to win it this time around? For sure, the team should always be included in the discussion. As of now, the team is ranked 7th in the world according to the FIFA world ranking and just from that point of view, of course, they could win it. The squad included some of the absolute best players in the world, Pogba, Kante, Matuidi, Griezmann, Mbappe etc. The amount of talent in the squad is monumental but it has been shown that this could be contra productive. With an abundance of world-class players that usually is the center of attention in their clubs, it has a tendency to result in problems. That is what happened during the World Cup in South Africa for Les Blues. Too many cooks spoil the broth…
In this group though, France should without any problems advance to the knock-out stages. If the country would do just that, the road to a possible semi-final will be quite comfortable. A solid bet is that France will win the group and perhaps it is time for the 1998 winners to do it once again.
