World Cup Russia 2018: Group E – Preview, Odds, and Predictions
The next group to dissect is Group E. The group contains one of the favorites to win, South America’s Brazil, Central America’s Costa Rica and Europe’s Serbia and Switzerland. Fun group with two teams that are favorites to advance to the knock-out stages but you never know. Just take Costa Rica as an example from four years ago. The tiny and somewhat blueberry country won (?!) the group of death in Brazil 2014. Costa Rica came first before massive football powerhouses like Uruguay, Italy, and England. The country left the group with two wins and one game drawn. This is what is so beautiful with this tournament, you never know if either the giants underperforms or the underdogs overperforms. While we still are on the subject, Costa Rica is still viewed as underdogs here, once again. The team got some European star players, perhaps the most famous one, Keylor Navas of Real Madrid. Additionally players like former Fulham player Ruiz, Deportivo La Coruna Celse Borges, and former Arsenal and current Real Betis player Joel Campbell. A couple of interesting players but the team will have trouble defeating the giants in the group but as said before, you never know. The big favorite in this group and perhaps in the whole tournament you have Brazil. The hosts of the last world cup are down for some serious redemption and their humiliating defeat in the semi-final at home. The team, as most of you, remember lost 1-7 against Germany. It was hurtful to see the total collapse and the devastating looks of the attendance. Even though the team has one of the absolute best squads in the tournament, the feelings regarding the team are uncertain. Neymar, Willian, Firmino, Marcelo, Coutinho, Gabriel Jesus, Thiago Silva, Douglas Costa etc. With a squad of this caliber, the team should be up there with the three or four best teams. It will be truly interesting to see what all these superstars can deliver.
Later you have Serbia. Serbia has had problems in relation to the big tournaments in the last 10 years. The team qualified for the world cup in 2010 but ended last in their group then. The team did not qualify for the Euros in 2012 and 2016 as well as the world cup in 2014. In the qualification for the Euro’s in 2012, the team came third in their qualifying group after small Estonia. No disrespect to the Baltic country but still. With players like Aleksandar Mitrović, Dušan Tadić, Nemanja Matić, Branislav Ivanović and Aleksandar Kolarov the team could turn this bad trend around this time but the possibility that the team comes last are still there.
Last but not least in this group you have Switzerland. The tiny county in the central parts of Europe have produced some proper talent and with a large population with heritage in the Balkans, there has been some turbulence in relation to what national team to represent. The Swiss is an interesting team and could actually go pretty far in the tournament. Their chances to win the group are slim but to advance to the knock-out stages are good.
