It is only 20 days until the opening game in Moscow and now in our undergoing analysis of all participating countries, it is time to dissect the North African nation of Morocco. Might, for many of you not be the most exciting team in the tournament but personally, I believe Marocco will offer the audience some beautiful displays of the game. Even if the country was drawn against some of the biggest giants (Spain & Portugal) you should never underestimate Hervé Renard’s squad. The manager is comparable with Europe’s Mourinho and Guardiola but on the African continent. The Frenchman has seen incredible successes with both the Ivory Coast and Zambia in the African Championships. Under the leadership of Renard, Marocco qualified for the tournament for the first time since 1998. The team was drawn in a difficult qualification group with countries like the Ivory Coast, Gabon, and Mali. With 12 points the team was able to secure first place and participation in the World Cup.

Even if the Moroccan team isn’t the most well-known there are a lot of interesting talent and some well-established players in the biggest leagues in Europe. Perhaps the most well-known among the players is the Juventus central defender and national team captain Medhi Benatia. Moreover, players like former Anderlecht and Lokomotiv Moscow midfielder Mbark Boussoufa, Galatasary’s Younès Belhanda, and Feyernoord’s Karim El Ahmadi are going to be apart of the team in Russia. Including in the teams are talented youngsters like Real Madrid’s Achraf Hakimi, Caen’s Youssef Aït Bennasser, and Schalke 04’s Amine Harit. These young players will be a great supplement to the veterans and with there energy, they will benefit the team greatly if they get the chance to play that will say.

But what are Morocco’s chances to advance to the knock-out stages? Well, the team has only done it once and that was in 1986. Being drawn in a group with two big favorites are of course not to Morocco’s favor but there is without a doubt a chance for the team to overachieve and might actually surpass either Spain or Portugal. One thing is sure though, it will be extremely interesting to see what Renard and his men will be able to do.
