Last and least we’ve Panama. From my point of view, the weakest team in the whole tournament. Sure, you could argue that Saudi Arabia and Australia is on a similar level but no, not really. Panama’s way to Russia is a massive achievement for the small Central American nation. Even if it is the biggest achievement in the nation’s history, the story has been surrounded by another nation’s failure. The United States failed to qualify and sadly this has somewhat resulted in that the Panamanian achievement has fallen out of the limelight. In the last round, the US was unable to win against Trinidad & Tobago and this resulted in that Panama got the last spot from the CONCACAF. But that is what it is, Panama is in the World Cup and we’ll analyze their chances to succeed in their first ever World Cup.

Panama’s chances are slim, almost microscopical. The Central American team ended up in a group with Europe’s Belgium and England as well as Africa’s Tunisia. Not an easy bunch to defeat and the international friendlies that the team has participated in has not made their chances improve. The team was dominated by Switzerland and lost 6-0 a couple of weeks ago. Frankly, the team is not playing in the same quality division as the rest. This could actually end up being a total disaster, kinda like North Korea did in 2006 (2-1, 7-0, 3-0). Panamas squad consists mostly of MLS players and players from their domestic league and a small number of players featured in Europe. The biggest star in the Panamanian team is their goalkeeper, Jaime Penedo who currently resides in Dinamo Bucharest.

The chances for Panama to advance to the knock-out stages are slim and it won’t happen. Fun that they will participate but any other bet on the team ending up last in group G would be foolish.
