From the South American continent, one country’s qualification is more surprising then that of the others: Peru. The country located in the western part of the continent has not qualified for the world cup since in 36 (!) years. It was about time. The Peruvians have been featured in the world cup four times and reached the quarterfinals twice. As of today, Peru is ranked 11th worldwide in the FIFA world ranking. That is quite impressive for a team that has not been a part of the biggest international competition since 1982. But is the team worth their placement in the football hierarchy?
Well, the team is not bad but they are pretty unknown. Jefferson Farfan is a player that most fans are aware of though. The former Schalke 04’s player, who today is playing for Lokomotiv Moscow is the biggest star in the squad that will participate in the tournament. This does not automatically mean that he is the best player the country has produced in later years. Paolo Guerrero, the country’s star striker has been suspended after FIFA officials found cocaine in his blood. There has been a massive outcry for the suspension to be repealed both from the Peruvian team and their fans but also from other countries. French captain and Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris together with the captains in Denmark and Australia has signed a petition for repealing the ban. We will see what happens with that but most likely, the team will have to survive without Guerrero. The team includes some players from the European top leagues. These include Watford’s Andre Carrillo, Feyernoord’s Renato Tapia, Aalborg’s Edison Flores and Paolo Hurtado currently residing in Vitoria Guimaraes in the Portuguese top flight. To be blunt, there are not an abundance of well-known players.
What are the chances for Peru then? They are actually pretty good. The Peruvians ended up in a quiet comfortable group. The team will clash with France, Denmark, and Australia. France is, of course, massive favorites in the group but the second spot is up for grabs by all the remaining teams. Australia is most likely going to end up last in the group but it will be close between Peru and Denmark. Everything will be decided in the teams first game and that is against Denmark.
