Finally, it is time for the rounds of 16. Before we start to look forward to the knock-out stages I find it important to look back at what has happened. Germany is out, the reigning champions only won one game and it was the first time since 1938 the nation didn’t qualify for the knock-out stages. Spain and Portugal had some problems in the last game against Iran and Marocco. I had praised both teams before the tournament and sadly the teams didn’t make it through, but what a fight they put up. Poland ended up last in their group and Senegal was eliminated by the fair play rule, the first time that ever happens. VAR has been introduced and the introduction has been met with mixed opinions. But overall, the tournament has been amazing. Hopefully, it will continue in the same direction.

A team that has disappointed a lot this far has been Argentina. The team with perhaps the best squad in the whole tournament advanced with some help from Croatia and a late goal by Rojo. It was a close call and the team has not played convincingly. Messi and a lot of the other players have not performed at the level you as a fan can demand. France meanwhile has not been on the level you could demand either even if the team didn’t lose during the group stage. The team barely won against Peru and Australia with 1-0 and 2-1. The team later drew against Denmark. This was not what most thought before the tournament. Two teams that didn’t perform will play against each other in the first game in the rounds of 16. When it comes to these two teams, France has been a bit more convincing and when it comes to performing under pressure, the strongest bet will be on France. 2-1
